Comparison
Alexa or Oye Mila for a parent who speaks Spanish?
Alexa is a good smart speaker, and it does speak Spanish. But Alexa was built to do a lot of things. Oye Mila was built for something much more specific: keeping a Spanish-speaking parent who lives alone company, helping them stay on track with their day, and keeping family in the loop.
The short version
| Alexa (Echo) | Oye Mila | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Needs home Wi-Fi and the Alexa app for setup | Plug it in. Cellular is built in, so there’s no Wi-Fi or app to set up |
| Who starts talking | Usually waits to be asked, but can give reminders and run routines that have been set up | Mila checks in on her own throughout the day |
| Spanish | Supports Spanish and bilingual modes | Made for people who prefer to speak Spanish. Mila speaks naturally and uses usted |
| Family updates | Family can manage features through the Alexa app | Family can get a text nightly, weekly, or only when something important comes up |
| Privacy | Some Echo models have cameras; others don’t | No camera. Day-to-day conversations stay private |
| Scam protection | Not designed specifically for this | If they tell Mila someone asked for money or personal information, she warns them and can alert family |
| Price | Lower upfront cost | $199 once, then $69.99/month. No contract |
When Alexa may be enough
If your parent is comfortable with technology, has Wi-Fi, and mostly wants music, weather, timers, and quick questions answered, an Echo may be all they need — and it costs less.
We’d rather tell you that than sell you something you don’t need.
When Oye Mila may be a better fit
They don’t usually start the conversation.
Mila does. She can say good morning, check in during the day, and remind them about things at the times that match their routine.
They live alone and you’re not nearby.
You can get a short text about how the day went instead of wondering or calling five times.
They don’t want to deal with another app.
There’s nothing for them to download, pair, or connect to Wi-Fi. Plug Mila in and she’s ready.
They’d rather speak Spanish.
Mila was made with that in mind from the beginning. She talks with them naturally in Spanish and uses usted.
Oye Mila isn’t for sale yet. We’re building our first batch now and talking with families as we finish it.
Can Alexa speak Spanish to my mom?
Yes. Alexa supports Spanish and bilingual English-Spanish modes.
The bigger difference is what each one was made for. Alexa is a general smart assistant. Mila checks in with your parent throughout the day without waiting for them to start the conversation.
Does Oye Mila need Wi-Fi?
No. Cellular service is built in. You plug Mila into the wall and she works without home Wi-Fi or an app.
Is Oye Mila a medical alert device?
No. Oye Mila does not automatically detect falls and is not a medical alert system. She can give reminders, check in during the day, and respond to what your parent tells her.
How much does Oye Mila cost compared with Alexa?
An Echo costs less upfront.
Oye Mila is $199 for the device and $69.99/month with no contract, or $699 for a full year. The service includes Mila’s cellular connection.
