Support for Spanish-speaking seniors in Long Beach
Oye Mila’s founder grew up in Long Beach, so this community is personal to us.
If your mom or dad lives in Long Beach, speaks Spanish, and needs a little more support at home, there are local programs that can help.
Here are a few good places to start — and where Oye Mila can fit into the hours when family or local services can’t be there.
Local help for seniors and their families
Long Beach Healthy Aging Center
(562) 570-3529
healthyagingcenter@longbeach.gov
The Healthy Aging Center, part of the City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, helps Long Beach residents age 55 and older find and access community resources.
The center offers referrals, social work and public health nursing support, and short-term case management for older adults who need additional help living safely and independently.
Long Beach Senior Center
1150 E. 4th St., Long Beach, CA 90802
(562) 570-3500
The Long Beach Senior Center serves adults age 50 and older and offers activities and a variety of services in one location.
Services available at the center include recreation, meals and nutrition programs, information and referrals, legal assistance, health-related services, and other resources. Spanish assistance is available for some services.
211 LA
Dial 2-1-1
If you aren’t sure where to start, 211 LA can connect you with resources throughout Los Angeles County.
They can help families find services related to food, housing, transportation, health care, caregiver support, and other needs. Assistance is available 24 hours a day and in multiple languages.
CSULB Center for Successful Aging
Cal State Long Beach’s Center for Successful Aging maintains a Long Beach Older Adult Resource Database for older adults, families, and caregivers.
The database includes resources for things like transportation, caregiver support, food, health, housing, and social connection, with information to help families identify services available in Spanish.
When you can’t be there
Senior services can help with meals, rides, and support at home. Family can call and visit. The senior center, church, friends, and neighbors help them stay connected.
But there are still a lot of hours in the day when your mom or dad may be home alone.
That’s where Oye Mila fits.
Oye Mila is a voice companion that talks with your mom or dad in Spanish throughout the day. She’s made to feel simple and familiar, not like another piece of technology they have to learn.
She can:
- Say good morning and start conversations throughout the day
- Remind them about medications and appointments
- Talk with them whenever they feel like talking
- Remember the people and things they tell her about
- Send the family a short update about how the day went
- Warn them if they mention that someone is asking for money or personal information
Oye Mila has cellular service built in. You plug it into the wall and it works without home Wi-Fi or a smartphone app.
Mila doesn’t replace you, a caregiver, or the people already in their life. She’s there when everyone else is busy or can’t be there.
We’re starting with families in Long Beach, Kern County, and the Antelope Valley.
Oye Mila isn’t for sale yet. We’re building our first batch now and talking with families as we finish it.
